Muzarabani Flood Relief

In the low-lying Zambezi Valley district of Zimbabwe, The Salvation Army has responded to flood-affected households through its local emergency service teams. Relentless rains caused massive flooding in the northern Zambezi valley, known as Muzarabani, killing a reported 27 people and leaving thousands homeless.

Heavy downpours are common in southern Africa during the annual rainy season, but this year’s relentless downpours have resulted in swollen rivers and estuaries in several southern African countries. (more…)

Commissioner Chigariro Installed

Following years of service in Tanzania and Zambia, Commissioner Vinece Chigariro has returned home to give oversight to the Zimbabwe Territory. Prior to her installation service at Kwekwe Corps, Commissioner Chigaririo received a hero’s welcome as she travelled in the back of an open truck to wave at the masses of Salvationists who lined the streets of Kwekwe to welcome her. The majority of Salvationists who attended the installation service were from the southern region of the territory.

Commissioners Amos and Rosemary Makina, International Secretary for Africa and Zonal Secretary for Women’s Ministries, were present to officially install Commissioner Chigariro as Territorial Commander and Territorial President for Women’s Ministries. At the close of the installation ceremony, Commissioner A. Makina called on all Salvationists to support their new territorial leader.

Ekhaya Adopts Bumhudzo

In recent years the Bumhudzo Home for the Elderly has struggled to remain operational. When Mr Tendai Mupfurutsa, CEO of Ekhaya, heard about Bumhudzo’s financial challenges, he devised a plan to temporarily adopt the centre and cover the majority of its expenses. (more…)

The 2008 session of the Zimbabwe School of Youth Leadership got off to a great start with 23 students meeting at Pearson Corps, Harare West, for two weeks of orientation. The students, representing 15 divisions, were accompanied by several Divisional Youth Officers who participated in the programme and assisted with the training.

Z.S.Y.L. students learned about Salvation Army history and structures, spiritual disciplines, evangelism, spiritual warfare, integrated mission, kids ministry, youth ministry, mentoring and accountability, creative communication and much more. (more…)

Territorial Officer’s Councils

The Territorial Officers’ Councils were marked by a high turnout as active and retired officers gathered together at Mazowe High School for worship, teaching sessions, shared learning and corporate prayer. In his keynote address, Commissioner S. Mutewera, former Territorial Commander, said that lack of funding had prevented the territory from holding officers’ councils since 2002, but that thanks to a donor, the event could now be held.

“We have gathered as a family to share our experiences in the mission so that we will uphold, comfort, learn and strengthen each other as a family of Salvationists,” said Commissioner Mutewera. (more…)

Witnesses for Christ

Forty cadets marched down the aisle to salute Commissioner Stanslous Mutewera, former Territorial Commander, as they entered training to become Salvation Army officers. Held at the Officers’ Training College, the event officially welcomed the cadets into the Witnesses for Christ Session.

Commissioner Mutewera also took the opportunity to officially install Captain Florence Pamacheche as the Training Principal. “This is the first time that a Zimbabwean woman has held this post,” he said. “Captain Pamacheche is a trained teacher and a faithful officer, and we know that she will be able to carry out the important tasks of this appointment.” (more…)

CSM Chikuya Receives Doctorate

Commissioners Mutewera Retire

Commissioners Stanslous and Jannet Mutewera retired officially on 16 December 2007 at Harare City Sports Centre after serving a combined ministry of 71 years. The retirement ceremony was witnessed by many Salvationists of the Zimbabwe & Botswana Territory. Also in attendance were government officials, including Vice President Joice Mujuru and Governor Masawi of Mashonaland Central Province. The meeting was conducted by Commissioners Alex and Ingerborg Hughes from the United Kingdom Territory. Commissioners Amos and Rosemary Makina, International Secretaries for Africa, also participated in the event.

Commissioner A. Hughes described the event as one of the best retirement services he had ever attended, characterised by beautiful singing and enthusiastic worship. Commissioner A. Hughes likened Commissioner S. Mutewera to the Old Testament character Caleb, who served God wholeheartedly and faithfully. Commissioner I. Hughes described Comissioner J. Mutewera as a woman of faith, compassion and prayer. (more…)
